30 Day TV Meme

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch

The original Star Trek.

Star Trek is the great grandmommy of all those other scifiish shows about a crew having a series of adventures in space. You know, Stargate. Battlestar Galactica, mostly. Babylon 5. Blake's 7. Farscape. Other versions of Star Trek, and Andromeda. Basically an entire genre -- a big, popular one -- is copying, drawing from, and attempting (attempting) to improve upon Star Trek, directly or indirectly. I know Gene Roddenberry didn't invent the concept, but he did permanently make it a part of TV by creating a really good show.

Which also, as a bonus, has Uhura in it. <3

For such an old show, Star Trek holds up really well. The pacing doesn't suck, like with a lot of other old shows I've seen. The plots often make sense. While imperfect, Star Trek is a lot more politically correct than you'd expect for its time and even beats some shows being made today. The characters were so memorable that they've stayed in the public's mind for 40 years. Everyone knows who Spock is.

So basically, taking "everyone" to mean "people who have ever shown an interest in scifi" (other people don't count anyway), Star Trek is something everyone needs to see.

Hey, I can post again! And I know what was going on now. Someone in my area must have been part of the botnet attacking LJ. It overlapped with unrelated ISP suck, and the news I saw from LJ was too vague for me to diagnose anything with until just now. But it's sorted.

Anyway, meme. Three giant walls of text, coming right up.

update or something, idk.

Went to coffee place for three hours. (Got a ride there with someone and hung out until I could get one back. Like, intentionally.) Meant to start on my remixthedrabble assignments. (Really happy with the fandoms I got paired up in. And hurray for not getting anyone that only writes porn this time!) Accidentally ended up writing...(checking right now)...just over 1000 words plus some notes of something that can only be describes as "Doctor Who and the Planet of the Cliffhangers". (So naturally, that's the title.)

Why do I do this to myself?

Am probably tagging along with my family to go see Star Trek tonight. Hope that there are people even though it's a Thursday and the movie's been out for a week. It would be lame without people laughing whenever another catchphrase gets worked in.

Will probably return with rant about Uhura/steadycams/Uhura/Sulu/Spock, WTF DID THEY DO TO SPOCK/the art of making your franchise stand out/why product placements are more wrong if you do them in Star Trek/Uhura/etc.. Because last time I saw it, I just thought it's a cross between how they "updated" Doctor Who and how they "updated" BSG, only with way more sexism and with race!wank I would buy into.

But also it was fun and there were lols, so I'm gonna watch again anyway. (Mmm, popcorn.)

Think in one of the trailers, I saw a time-traveling red phone box. Are we at the point where people do tributes to Bill & Ted's tribute to Doctor Who? Stupid America, thinking we invented everything. :\

Edit: Back from Star Trek. It's much less funny with 1/3 of a theater full of random people rather than a full theater of fat, loud, Trek-loving nerds. Ah, well. The CG was still pretty, and that's the whole point of this movie, so.

Decided not to post rant because going to see it twice is a much louder vote than anything I say here anyway. It's a fun CG-action-sci-fi movie. Worth seeing as one of those. As Star Trek (and I am speaking as someone who really isn't into Star Trek but has lately decided it's probably not the worst show ever, not as a trekkie feeling betrayed because change is bad), it's 308 kinds of fail. But if you let go of the title and the names and faces of associated characters, and look at the running Star Trek references/jokes the way you would look at Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series or That 70s Show doing the episode with all the Star Wars references, it's quite enjoyable.

That was one contradictory paragraph, wasn't it?

I'm gonna go read fic now.
